Vikunja - task management, lists, Kanban, Gantt, etc

I was just talking with Ismael David Angulo Andrade, a Trufi Association colleague in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I told him that I was using Trello. He told me about Vikunja, an open-source alternative.

Ismael is a big fan. I invited him to join this Discourse. Maybe we’ll see him.

Awesome! Would love to learn more about Vikunja.. if you get access to an install, do invite me!

I have yet to settle on the best place for this. There are alot of good options available to me before even thinking about new software.

Discourse has some pretty nice features for task management.. you can assign topics, set topic timers, todo lists in topics, smart links to other topics, etc etc. I got really embedded in this way of working when I worked at Discourse where we of course were dogfooding our own product! We were using it and improving it on a daily basis. It makes good sense in that context. Some features like kanban don’t work as nicely as I would like, eg moving cars around to put together a project with multiple tasks.

Nextcloud also wants to be the tool of choice for task management and has loads of features built in and heavily integrated. I’ve been thinking I’d like to let my clients have access to my nextcloud where we can securely share things like lists of users with email addresses, account passwords, schedule and hold secure calls, etc etc. It would make sense to then also have a kanban board for managing and sharing progress on projects.

If you’d be up for it, when we talk next week I’d love to share screens and explore these options together.

Maybe Ismael would demo Vikunja for us. I haven’t used very many kanban tools: Trello, GitHub, and… maybe that’s all. I think Slack has kanban functionaity now too.

That would be cool! There is no free trial on the hosted vikunja. I do like the way that project is positioned - it’s exactly the kind of open source project I enjoy supporting and being part of.

I used to love trello - that was my first experience with it.

I’ll ask Ismael if he’s willing. He’s in Bolivia, so the I’ll be the difficult scheduling factor.

Wait! Do you you have a self-hosted meeting scheduling tool, like Doodle?

Maybe he can join here and we can do it asynchronously?

I’ll spin up another topic for this.. nextcloud does have a “meeting proposal” tool that I’d like to try.
