Here’s how to use the built-in iPhone screen recorder: add Screen Recording to Control Center if it isn’t there, open Control Center, tap the gray Record button, wait for the 3-second countdown, and then leave Control Center to record. To stop, tap the red recording indicator at the top of the screen and confirm stop, or open Control Center and tap the red Record button again.[1]
Add the control
Open Settings.
Tap Control Center.
Add Screen Recording if it is not already included.[1]
Record with sound
Touch and hold the Screen Recording control to open options.
Tap the Microphone button if you want to capture your voice too.
Tap Start Recording to begin after the countdown.[2][1]
Find the video
Your recording saves automatically in the Photos app, where you can view, edit, or share it.[1]

My personal experience the steps were a bit different. I found it directly on the control center. A long press away from the buttons gave me a UI to remove existing controls and to add a new one. I found screen recording and added it.
Doing a screen recording is super easy, just like your instructions. To stop recording I selected the red record button that appears at the top.
After saving my recording, I opened it in the quicktime player on my laptop and exported it at lower quality so that I could upload it to github. That can work here as well - we can take uploads of tens of megabytes directly in topics which is handy for working through issues directly here rather than relying on google drive or some other cloud file sharing.
This will be super helpful for reporting problems and asking for help with doing things on mobile.
Looks like the UI for adding the screen recorder to the control center has changed.. I wrote this up on my client portal as follows. Still have to decide how I want to share screencasts like this. Right now I am linking to a shared file on my nextcloud but I think using peertube will allow me to embed the actual screencast. TBD..
When asking for help or wanting to explain a problem you are experiencing on your iPhone (or iPad), it helps to create a quick video of what you are seeing on the screen and sending it to the person helping you. On iPhone, this is surprisingly easy to set up.
All you have to do is add “Screen recording” to the control center accessible when you swipe down from the top right corner. You can add and remove controls by pressing the + button in the top left corner. To record, long press on the Screen recording button. That’s where you can also enable/disable the microphone which is handy for explaining to me what you are trying to do. You can also just press on the Screen recording button and leave the control center to start recording. To stop recording, select the red recording icon at the very top of the phone and press the stop button.
Then go to your Photos to share your recording with me! I can then also make a recording to show you how to solve your problem. Try to keep your recording short to keep the file size reasonable.
