Digitally sovereign git versioning?

I want to set up a digitally sovereign git server to manage my website and small collection of scripts, prompted by Italo:

Added a topic for gitlab, then investigated what would be involved in installing it. Seems to be overkill for my own needs and would need its own server, so I think I will go with forgejo.

Forgejo (what a weird and hard to type name!) is a fork of gitea, and ticks many digital sovereignty boxes. It also duplicates alot of what is already in nextcloud, discourse and outline! Will have to be careful to only use it for git versioning, to start with.

Super interested in what others are using and happy to share my experience with forgejo.

Oh. It’s not pronounced “forge joe” like I thought, with my American accent bias. :star:

Forgejo (/for’d͡ʒe.jo/ inspired by forĝejo – the Esperanto word for forge) has you covered with its intuitive interface, light and easy hosting and a lot of built-in functionality.

I’ve set up git.tobiaseigen.org now. If you want access to try it out, let me know or just go there to see if you get logged in automatically - some of you already have access.

One benefit that will be interesting to explore is using it to allow us to give each other ssh access to our servers temporarily, then take access away again when it is no longer needed. This will allow us to help each other in emergencies without always having to have access.

The runbook is here.

I’ve put up some repos! Realizing as I do it that I have more to offer than I realized, just from the last few months of vibe coding to set this all up. Makes me feel a leetle bit vulnerable putting this up there so let me know if I am doing anything risky here.

I also always have more to learn and git is one area where I am excited to become more comfortable. It’s a great way to maintain and share code, so it’s kept safe and easy for others to use.
