If digital sovereignty is important to you, you will want to make sure your devices are not being backed up to Apple’s icloud servers. Instead you will keep your data synced your self-hosted servers which are then also backed up.
Steps to Turn Off iCloud Sync for Email, Calendar, and Contacts
To disable iCloud sync for your email, calendar, and contacts, follow these steps based on your device type.
For iPhone or iPad
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Select iCloud.
- Toggle off the options for:
- Contacts
- Calendars
For Mac
- Click on the Apple menu () in the top-left corner.
- Select System Settings.
- Click your name.
- Under iCloud, uncheck the boxes for:
- Contacts
- Calendars
For Windows
- Open iCloud for Windows.
- Deselect the checkboxes for:
- Contacts
- Calendars
- Click Apply to save your changes.
By following these steps, you will successfully turn off iCloud sync for your email, calendar, and contacts across your devices.
