Not sure how it happened, but at #global-gathering a conversation devolved into home automation. I described all the disparate tools I am using currently (smart plugs, smart cat door) and someone mentioned home assistant.

I am dropping this here because I don’t have the bandwidth to look at it now but am super interested. If you have case studies, resources or personal stories to share that can help, please do!

Generally speaking, I feel I have been too focused on cloud-based self-hosting and need to turn my attention to local self-hosting of things that only I use and want to be able to access anytime when I am at home, even if there is an outage.

As a fellow home assistant user, I can tell you it does not stop at deploying home assistant, immediately after doing that you have a bunch of smart appliances, then switches, then lights then other items (like sensors), but none of them Do the job quite right so you end up buying two dozen ESP32s and sensor packages making your own sensors with esphome.

Let’s start a topic in #Members only to exchange stories about how we are using home assistant, and which sensors and automations are worth doing and which _seem_ like a good idea but are actually a waste of time. 😅 This will be fun!
