open sourced directory of self hosting solutions managed at github. open for pull requests.
Hi Toka and welcome! Enjoyed our Indian lunch yesterday in Berlin and look forward to repeating that again sometime soon, next time in your neighborhood!
This list is impressive! And I like that it seeks to be comprehensive and allows community contributions.
It is a rabbit hole, though! Here I am trying to post only the open source software that I am curious about and considering (or already) recommending to people who are seeking to become digitally sovereign.
I can see the awesome-selfhosted list being handy for quickly finding out about software you’ve heard about, and then seeing it alongside other similar software.
Yes, I agree. Suggesting programs here without personal experience is unhelpful. Currently, there seems to be no nomenclature for marking user experience. A simple system for this would be a reaction convention. This could encode who uses the stack and is able to share experiences without generating much noise.
Thanks for the feedback! Totally open to suggestions for improving things here, as long as they don’t take me too much more work!
Water Cooler > Site feedback is always open for feedback topics.
For me, keeping a laundry list works because I can refer back to it over time and build on it as I try out things, for example using tags to pull topics together that belong together. For instance peertube has been talked about in more topics.
I just posted a whole bunch of new ones I found out about at fediday but still have to return to explore them further! Or maybe others can comment on them if they have experience?
A quick note about awesome self hosted, although it is a great resource, it has at time lead me to misguided assumptions, some of the projects there can be abandoned or discontinued at times so do some due diligence before deciding to pick a candidate from their list and deploying it.
That totally makes sense.. before installing something, always do the due diligence to check the project website, repository, documentation, and community to make sure it is alive and healthy!
